Beyond the Scales
The story
Why Beyond the Scales
- Indian classical music is more than an after-school activity. It is a lifelong commitment requiring time, patience and priorities.
- Music builds discipline, focus and cultural values — and changes how we see the world through rhythm, harmony and reflection.
- Just as a geologist, hiker and historian see the Grand Canyon differently, a musician develops a deeper perspective on life through listening and learning.
- Learning extends beyond lessons: listening to concerts, meeting artists, attending events and belonging to a like-minded community help us grow as people, not just performers.
Our aim
From listening to understanding
A Carnatic concert can feel beautiful yet unfamiliar without context. As learners gain exposure, they begin to visualize and feel the ideas behind the melody — appreciating not only what they hear, but how it is created.
- Bridge the gap between a common listener's experience and a learner's perspective.
- Help families appreciate the science and art behind ragam, tanam, pallavi, mathematical korvais, raga elaboration and manodharma swaras.
- Give children real performance opportunities and help families understand the depth of what they are learning.
- Create a sustainable, welcoming space for students, performers, parents and curious minds to learn, listen and grow together.

Connections beyond the classroom
We aspire to collaborate with different music schools, bridge Carnatic and Hindustani traditions, connect Indian and Western music, and welcome dance schools and community leaders. Beyond the Scales is our starting point for those possibilities.
